What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?
Dry Eye Syndrome may often be caused by a condition known as Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The Meibomian glands, located in your eyelids, produce oils (lipids) that are crucial for maintaining eye moisture and preventing tear evaporation. When these glands become blocked over time, they stop producing enough oil, leading to dry eye symptoms. MGD is the primary cause or contributor in up to 85% of dry eye disease cases. We offer advanced cutting-edge treatments at Spectrum Eye Clinic + Medspa for Meibomian gland dysfunction, including FORMA-I by Inmode®, OptiLIGHT by LumenisTM, and TearCare® to help manage and alleviate your dry eye symptoms effectively.
What is Forma-I?
Forma-I utlizes innovative thermal technology with targeted bipolar radiofrequency energy for small ocular areas, offering a medical solution that benefits millions of dry eye disease sufferers. Treatments are quick, safe, and conducted in-office, providing a non-drug alternative that enhances meibomian gland function, alleviates dry eye symptoms, and reflects our commitment to improving patients' quality of life.
How Does Forma-I Work?
Forma-I feels like a warm massage in the eye area, improving blood circulation and heating the Meibomian Glands to soften the clogged glands and stimulate healthy oil production. We heat each eye area for about 10 minutes.
What Can I Expect During a Forma-I Treatment?
Before Your Treatment
If you're experiencing symptoms of dry eyes such as redness, excessive tearing, or irritation with a gritty feeling, reach out to us at Spectrum Eye Clinic + Medspa for a consultation appointment. Our dedicated team of dry eye specialists will assess your condition, including determining if you have Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), and discuss whether the Forma-I® treatment might be suitable for you.
During Your Treatment
Preparation
The patient’s eyes are typically numbed with anesthetic eye drops to ensure their comfort during the procedure. The specialist may also clean the eyelids and lashes to remove any debris or makeup.
Meibomian Gland Expression
The specialist uses a device or specialized instrument to apply controlled radiofrequency energy to the meibomian glands located within the eyelids. This energy gently warms and expresses the glands, helping to release the thickened and obstructed meibum (lipid) that contributes to dry eyes.
Tear Film Improvement
The combination of heat and meibomian gland expression improves the quality of the tear film by enhancing the lipid layer, which helps to prevent excessive evaporation of tears.
Treatment Duration
The Forma-I dry eye treatment usually takes a relatively short amount of time, with the procedure lasting around 15 to 30 minutes for both eyes.
Post-Treatment Care
After the treatment, patients may experience mild redness or temporary sensitivity to light. The specialist provides post-treatment instructions, which may include recommendations for artificial tears, lid hygiene, and lifestyle modifications to manage dry eye symptoms.
Follow-Up Appointments
Patients may need to schedule follow-up appointments to assess their progress and determine if additional treatments or ongoing management are necessary.
