What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

Dry Eye Syndrome may often be caused by a condition known as Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The Meibomian glands, located in your eyelids, produce oils (lipids) that are crucial for maintaining eye moisture and preventing tear evaporation. When these glands become blocked over time, they stop producing enough oil, leading to dry eye symptoms. MGD is the primary cause or contributor in up to 85% of dry eye disease cases. We offer advanced cutting-edge treatments at Spectrum Eye Clinic + Medspa for Meibomian gland dysfunction, including FORMA-I by Inmode®, OptiLIGHT by LumenisTM, and TearCare® to help manage and alleviate your dry eye symptoms effectively.

What is OptiLIGHT?

OptiLIGHT by Lumenis offers a revolutionary, non-invasive solution for managing dry eye. This innovative treatment is performed in the area below the eyes and is the first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management. OptiLight is safe, gentle, and supported by over 20 clinical studies, making it a trusted choice for those seeking effective relief from dry eye symptoms.

How Does OptiLIGHT Work?

OptiLight by Lumenis utilizes precise pulses of light to reduce inflammation commonly associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and enhance meibomian gland functionality. This innovative treatment significantly relieves dry eye symptoms by increasing tear break-up time, reducing demodex mites and bacteria around the eyes, eliminating blood vessels that contribute to inflammation, and improving the functionality of the meibomian glands.

What Can I Expect During a OptiLIGHT Treatment?

Before Your Treatment

If you're experiencing symptoms of dry eyes such as redness, excessive tearing, or irritation with a gritty feeling, reach out to us at Spectrum Eye Clinic + Medspa for a consultation appointment. Our dedicated team of dry eye specialists will assess your condition, including determining if you have Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), and discuss whether the OptiLIGHT® treatment might be suitable for you.

During Your Treatment

  • Preparation

The OptiLIGHT® treatment is fast and simple. During the treatment, a thin layer of cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area and the patient’s eyes will be covered with shields to protect them from the light pulses. The specialist may also clean the eyelids and lashes to remove any debris or makeup.

  • During Your Treatment

The specialist uses a small device that administers pulses of light to the region around the eyelids. As light is applied to the skin, you may experience a warm sensation, dislodging oil buildup.

  • Treatment Duration

The OptiLIGHT® dry eye treatment usually takes a relatively short amount of time, with the procedure lasting around 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes. An ideal combination is often to follow with meibomian gland expression, depending on the doctor’s recommendation.

  • Post-Treatment Care

Immediately following the treatment, patients may experience some redness, which will usually disappear within a few hours. Patients can return to daily activities and apply makeup within an hour of the procedure in most cases. We advise patients to stay out of direct sun for a few weeks following the treatment and to apply sunscreen regularly. After the treatment, patients are recommended to avoid direct sun exposure. Additonal post-treatment instructions will be provided to help minimize the healing time. Patients should also avoid skincare products that contain: Benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A, Retinol and Glycolic acids.

  • Follow-Up Appointments

A course of treatment typically includes 4 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart.

  • Is it right for me?

OptiLight dry eye treatments are not suitable for everyone and, like every treatment, can carry some risks. Treatment with OptiLight is contraindicated for patients with the following conditions in the treatment area: active infections, dysplastic nevi, tattoos, significant concurrent skin inflammation (excluding rosacea or acne), active cold cores, open lacerations, abrasions, and prolonged sun exposure. Caution is advised for patients with a compromised immune system, coagulation disorders, photosensitivity, hormonal disorders, or a history of Herpes simplex outbreaks near the treatment area. Patients’ eyes must be occluded with eye shields during the treatment.

  • When will I see results?

While some outcomes like tear breakup time are noticeably improved after the first treatment, most patients start to feel clinical improvement in their eyes between the second and third treatment.
